According to the book "Falling Stars" there are 4 things to look for in a recovered meteorite.

1 It must be magnetic or attract a iron magnet.
2 There will be a thin, dark fusion crust over all or most the surface, due to plunge thru atmosphere.
3 It has an aerodynamic shape to it.
4 Should have thumbprint sized depressions on the surface from the plunge thru the air.

If cut and acid etched the metal ones could have a crystalline metallic structure where the air didn't penetrate during the fall. Some of the rarer ones can be worth up to $200. per gram...

Hope this helps!

Most likely what you have is magnetite. I have found a couple of large pieces from there. If I remember I'll put them in my stuff and bring to next meeting.
Don't sweat the small stuff and it's all small stuff
