Where in the Outer Banks are you going?? If your going to be near Nags Head and north of there you'll be fine detecting but anything south of there is off limits to detecting. Corolla, Duck, Southern Shores, Kitty Hawk, Kill Devil Hills and Nags Head are the popular places to go but stay away from any State Parks, Preserves, Refuges..etc., also between June and August it's against the law to detect on any NC beach.

Oh I know..we vacationed down there for a week years ago, stayed in the little community of Avon just north of Cape Hatteras..it killed me thinking of the stuff that was under my feet as I walked the beach every morning at sun-up. Take binoculars along with you..wish I would have thought to have taken a pair, I'd sit on the beach and watch dolphins and rays jumping out of the water not far offshore and one morning, a short distance from the hotel, I came across a dead shark that had washed ashore during the night, by the time I walked back through going back to the hotel the Rangers already had it loaded, hauling it away. If you do go down into the National seashore to sightsee..even the seashells are protected!! The hotel staff told us how much the fines would be if caught taking any. You can look but don't touch.

If you do any water detecting, you'll be dealing with 40-55+ degree waters depending on the current, here's a link to know what current temps are...

I found a little bit of everything at the Outer Banks. I found fish hooks, nails, ship spikes, pier bolts and a lot of junk. LOL I think I also found some parts off of the USS Huron that wrecked off Nags Head in 1877 I found some coal off of the Metropolis that wrecked in 1878
I found two things i don't know what they are yet, they are still encrusted with sea sediment. Hopefully they are valuable. LOL

It was the best trip we have ever took. We seen 4 lighthouses We took a ferry ride from Cape Hatteras to Ocracoke. We went to Roanoke Island to see Fort Raleigh. We also seen the Wright brothers memorial, yes its as windy as they say it is. LOL
We had a great time, we cant wait to go back.
